Call for the New European Bauhaus Awards 2024 open: until 17 November

The European Commission has opened the call for entries for the New European Bauhaus (NEB) Awards 2024. In this edition, 20 innovative projects and concepts, which are representative of the values of the movement: sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion, will be recognised.

In previous editions, more than 4,500 entries have been received for the NEB Awards. For the first time, this year the call is open to projects and concepts from Ukraine and the Western Balkans, in addition to EU Member States. A special category, ‘Special Recognition to Ukraine’s Reconstruction and Recovery Effort’, will recognise projects and concepts that contribute to the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine in accordance with the values of the New European Bauhaus.

Also new this year are projects and concepts from EU regions facing socio-economic problems or challenges in the double digital and ecological transition.

Applications are open until 17 November 2023 at 19:00. Applicants of all nationalities and backgrounds are eligible if their concepts and projects are implemented in the EU, the Western Balkans or Ukraine. Applications must be submitted via the official platform of the New European Bauhaus Awards.

Rewarding sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion

The 2024 Awards will reward existing projects and concepts developed by young talents in four categories:

  • Reconnecting with nature.
  • Reclaiming a sense of belonging.
  • Prioritise the places and people who need it most.
  • Shaping a circular industrial ecosystem and supporting life-cycle thinking.

In line with previous editions, in each of the four categories, two competition strands are established:

1-‘New European Bauhaus Champions’, aimed at existing and completed projects with clear and positive results.

2- ‘New European Bauhaus Rising Stars’, for concepts submitted by young talents aged 30 and under. Concepts can be at different stages of development, from ideas with a clear plan to prototype level.

“The New European Bauhaus Awards are a meaningful way to promote and reward innovative, cultural and pioneering projects that bring the European Green Pact closer to our citizens. I am pleased that, once again, young talents have their own space. In this year’s edition, the reconstruction of Ukraine will receive special attention. I am looking forward to seeing new creative projects and expanding the NEB community,” says Iliana Ivanova, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth.

Award ceremony in April

Twenty winners will be chosen and will receive prizes of up to 30,000 euros, as well as a package of communication services “to help them further develop and promote their projects and concepts”.

The winners will be announced at the New European Bauhaus Festival, to be held in Brussels from 17-21 April. The festival will bring together people from diverse backgrounds in a series of workshops, activities and side events to discuss and shape our future. The call for satellite events is still open until 31 December 2023.

The New European Bauhaus is a creative and interdisciplinary initiative that connects the European Green Pact with our living spaces and experiences. The initiative invites everyone to reshape our future and make it more sustainable, beautiful and inclusive, promoting positive and inclusive experiences for all.

Launched by President von der Leyen in her 2020 State of the Union address, the New European Bauhaus has been designed together with thousands of people and organisations from across Europe and beyond.
