Verdifresh – ‘CleveR7’ for the sustainability of containers and packaging

Verdifresh is constantly researching packaging, looking for more sustainable alternatives and ensuring the recycled origin or recyclability of the materials used, especially plastic.

◇ Objectives:

  • Increased use of recycled materials.
  • Use of mono-materials and more recyclable materials.
  • Reduction of weights and thicknesses (even elimination).
  • Always guaranteeing the freshness, quality and food safety of products.

All Verdifresh salad packaging in bowl format contains at least 70% recycled material and is 100% recyclable. In addition, the company has started to carry out tests with its suppliers with the aim of achieving 100% R-PET bowl packaging.

In Germany and Switzerland, the group’s ‘Daily Bowls’ and ‘Premium’ salads are marketed in an alternative packaging to plastic, made from PFEC certified and 100% recyclable cardboard and with a lid made from PLA, a type of plastic derived from natural and renewable raw materials.

In the latter, Verdifresh has improved the forks that accompany the bowl-format salad assortment. Specifically, they have reduced their plastic by 42%, are 100% recyclable and are certified as “reusable”. In addition, forks made from other materials, such as wood and bamboo, are also available.

Verdifresh is also working on the development of new materials. It is immersed in research into compostable and/or biodegradable materials as an alternative to conventional plastic such as PLA.

In this field, it participates in the ‘Retos’ and ‘MonoMatPack’ projects, promoted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, cooperating with various international agents to develop packaging made from 100% recyclable and biodegradable materials that ensure maximum food safety in pre-prepared convenience food products (ready-to-eat vegetables).
